COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Lowell Road Reconstruction Project will start this Tuesday, May 28. It involves widening Lowell Road from the west side of U.S.31 to just past County Road 200W.
With the increase in housing development, Lowell Road has become the alternate route to and from the west side of town. The City of Columbus determined that because of heavier traffic volumes and the age and condition of the road, now is the time for reconstruction to make the road safer.
The $3 million federally funded road project will add a 10-foot multi-use side path on the south side of Lowell Road and a five-foot concrete sidewalk on the north side. ADA-compliant ramps and stormwater infrastructure will also be installed. Lowell Road will be expanded to three lanes, with the center lane being designated as a turn lane.
During peak traffic times, it is now difficult for vehicles to turn onto Lowell Road, from County Road 200W. A lighted and landscaped roundabout will be installed at this intersection for safety and improved flow in all directions.
On or after Tuesday, May 28, Milestone crews are scheduled to close Lowell Road from U.S. 31 to Drummond Drive to begin road reconstruction.
Local access to Progress Drive, Princeton Park Drive, Hackberry Drive, Stanford Drive, and Carter Crossing will not be maintained. Alternate routes and entrances should be identified and used during this time. The intersection of County Road 200 West and Lowell Road will remain closed for the duration of the project, which is expected to last ninety days.
