CHARLESTOWN, Ind. – Detectives from the Indiana State Police (ISP)-Sellersburg Post are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in rural southern Indiana, near Louisville, on Saturday evening.
The Charlestown Police Department received a request for a welfare check on an adult male at around 4:30 p.m. The man’s vehicle was located in a parking lot at the Nine Penny Branch Nature Preserve, in Clark County, at 5 p.m.
Charlestown Police Department officers, Clark County Sheriff’s Department deputies, and Indiana Conservation officers searched the nature preserve’s trails and found him shortly before 5 p.m. He was allegedly holding a handgun.
At some point during the encounter, a Charlestown Police Department officer fired at least one round, striking the suspect.
First aid was rendered, and the wounded man was then transported to the University of Louisville Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Charlestown Police Department placed the officer who fired his weapon on administrative leave and requested ISP to lead the investigation.
The identities of the injured man and law enforcement personnel have not yet been released.
