COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) received several calls about a male purportedly stumbling in the roadway in the 8000 block of State Road 58, on Saturday, at around 5:30 p.m. The callers stated that the man had urinated in public and appeared to be carrying a shotgun.
Deputies located him and he was later identified as Derick Krebbs, 34, of Columbus. While being held at gunpoint, law enforcement says the suspect initially disobeyed several commands to drop the firearm before finally placing it on the ground.
Krebbs refused all other commands and allegedly told deputies to shoot him several times. At two different points during the standoff, Krebbs supposedly made a motion to pick up the firearm.
After several minutes, the situation was de-escalated and he was handcuffed. However, BCSO says the man soon became physically resistant and kicked one of the deputies in the leg.
The suspect was placed under arrest and taken to Bartholomew Couty Jail on a 48-hour hold. He faces charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and battery of a law enforcement officer.
Krebbs later allegedly provided a preliminary breath test sample of .15% BrAC.
All persons are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation is ongoing.
