BARGERSVILLE, Ind. – Space heaters have been deemed the cause of two recent residential fires in the Bargersville area.
The fires occurred within a week of one another, and they resulted in severe damage to the properties and the displacement of two families.
There were no injuries reported in either blaze but officials at the Bargersville Fire Department are highlighting the fire and carbon monoxide dangers that portable heaters can cause.
Here are some things to remember about safely using space heaters:
- Select an appropriate one for the space you want to heat. Consider the size of the room
- Familiarize yourself with the heater’s manual and safety guidelines before using it
- Keep it away from flammable items: Maintain a safe distance of at least three feet
- Place on a stable surface to minimize the risk of being knocked over accidentally
- Never leave it unattended; turn it off and unplug it when you leave the room or go to bed
- Ensure that the space around the heater is clear of any obstructions or obstacles
- Use a space heater with built-in thermostats or timers to avoid overheating
- Provide proper ventilation when using fuel-powered heaters as they produce carbon monoxide
- Regularly inspect the power cord and plug; if damaged, replace it
- Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the area of the heater
