COLUMBUS, Ind. – About 200 Shelby County college and high school students will gather for a skills-building and professional development event during Ivy Tech’s 6th Annual Shelby County Scholarship Leadership Day starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 18, at The Barn at Hamner Ridge, 6315 Hucklebuck Lane, in Edinburgh.
Leadership Day is an opportunity for Ivy Tech Community College students in the Columbus Service Area who are receiving the Advantage Shelby County scholarship to participate in skill-building enrichment and professional development facilitated by influential Ivy Tech and Shelby County leaders. Additionally, the event serves as a college and career fair for Advantage students to provide professional networking and potential career opportunities.
Students attending Leadership Day include current Advantage Shelby County Scholarship students, Advantage Shelby County alumni, and an invited list of high schoolers. Advantage Shelby County is a promise scholarship and a collaboration between city and county governments and Ivy Tech Community College. The program provides scholarship funding to qualified Shelby County students to pay tuition costs not covered by state, federal, or institutional aid.
Advantage Shelby County is a two-year college scholarship program specifically aimed at raising educational attainment and workforce readiness in Shelby County. The college attainment level in Shelby County has increased by 10% since the fall of 2016. Approximately 24% of the graduating seniors in Shelby County took advantage of the Advantage Shelby County Scholarship this year.
In exchange for local support, students agree to perform 10 hours of community service each semester as an eligibility requirement for the scholarship.
