COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus Police Department (CPD) officers who are military veterans will soon receive service pins to wear on their uniform. The pins will display the branch of armed services in which the officer participated.
The new initiative was proposed by an officer who attended a law enforcement conference earlier in the year, per CPD’s Lt. Matt Harris. During the conference, the officer spoke with a counterpart from Ohio who mentioned that their department issues pins to officers who are veterans to recognize their service and to assist with crisis calls for service involving veterans.
“We are proud that 35% of our officers are military veterans or are currently serving in our nation’s armed forces,” Columbus Chief of Police Michael Richardson said. “These officers possess courage and discipline that they continue to use in their law enforcement careers. “We want to recognize their hard work and service to our country by issuing service pins to wear proudly on their CPD uniform.”
