SEYMOUR, Ind. – The Indiana State Police (ISP)-Versailles Post on Friday arrested a Jackson County man on theft and forgery charges following a 10-month investigation into the theft of funds from a volunteer fire department.
The inquiry began in September 2020 when officials with the Jackson-Washington Township Fire Department told the state police that they suspected one of its members stole thousands of dollars from the organization.
During 2019 and 2020, Christopher L. McKain, 44, of Seymour, worked for the small fire department executing various tasks. While employed there, he allegedly purchased items for the department and forged invoices from several businesses showing that he had bought them. The suspect then supposedly submitted the fraudulent invoices to the Jackson-Washington Township Treasurer where he was reimbursed.
ISP detectives say they believe the volunteer firefighter scammed about $20,000 from the department over the two-year period. After the case was reviewed by the Jackson County Prosecutor, McKain was arrested for theft and forgery, both Level 6 felonies. He now resides at the Jackson County Jail.
