COLUMBUS, Ind. – State Rep. Ryan Lauer and State Sen. Greg Walker fielded questions at Monday morning’s Third House session, presented by the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce. Most queries were about education.
Regarding incomes threshold on school vouchers, Walker said, that while he’s a strong proponent of choice who homeschooled four kids, he sees the law of diminishing returns at work such that making funds available to more families does not “necessarily create better outcomes.”
With regard to the possibility of fraud in the Education Savings Account program, Lauer said vetting the treasurer’s office prevents that as an issue, saying, “Facts about ESAs in other states don’t bear that out.”
Other matters addressed in the hour-long session were a cigarette tax increase, administration of wind and solar projects at the county level, reducing opioid addiction, and the overall budget.
