JASPER COUNTY, Ind. – In a new release on Sunday night and updated Monday afternoon, the Indiana State Police (ISP) said, at the request of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, it is investigating last weekend’s officer-involved shooting.
Preliminary investigations by the ISP Criminal Investigations Division Lowell Post revealed that a deputy with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department performed a traffic stop on a vehicle on State Road 14, east of County Road 475E, near the Pulaski County line, at around 4:15 on Sunday afternoon.
During the pullover, the officer attempted to arrest the suspect but the suspect allegedly resisted. An altercation took place between the suspect and the deputy, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect. The investigation also shows that during the traffic stop, the suspect possessed a firearm.
After an autopsy was completed Monday morning, the Jasper County Coroner identified the deceased as Matthew W. Huttle, 42, of Hobart.
It is being reported that Huttle was pardoned last week by President Donald Trump for charges related to the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. He pled guilty to Entering a Restricted Building in 2023 and was sentenced to six months.
Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson said, “For full transparency, I requested the Indiana State Police to investigate this officer-involved shooting. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol and is our policy in these situations. I will release the officer’s name once I have approval from the State Police Detectives.”
This investigation is ongoing. Once it is completed, the findings will be submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for formal review.
