NORTH VERNON, Ind. — Drive sober or get pulled over. That’s the warning Jennings County Sheriff’s Office and the North Vernon Police Department are issuing to drivers as they gear up for the annual end-of-summer impaired driving enforcement campaign.
Through September 2, law enforcement in Jennings County Sheriff’s Office will join with officers across the state to increase patrols and sobriety checkpoints to crack down on driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, through grants administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, is funding the high-visibility campaign.
In 2023, over 20% of all traffic fatalities in Indiana involved alcohol or drug impairment.
According to Jennings County Sheriff Kenny Freeman and North Vernon Police Department Sergeant Isaac N. Barkes, “We want our community members to understand that it’s our priority to keep people safe, so we’re asking everyone to designate a sober driver or use a ride service if you know you’ll be out drinking. Help us protect the community and end this senseless behavior.”
