NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The Jennings County Food Security Coalition is working to ensure residents don’t go hungry. The Coalition consists of different pantries and food providers dedicated to ending hunger in the county.
The goal is that all county residents have access to safe, nutritious food that meets their preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy lifestyle.
It started in 2022 with a kickoff event at the Park Theatre Civic Centre in North Vernon as the theater showed the documentary “The Working Hungry.”
In 2023, the Coalition started providing Blessing Boxes to organizations. Blessing Boxes are outdoor, publicly-located cabinets that allow people to anonymously donate items for others in need. The boxes are a temporary solution for people without access to food pantries or government safety net programs.
Last October, the Coalition partnered with the Jennings County Community Foundation to host training to help people learn best practices for managing a Blessing Box and the safety of the food in the box. Participants also had an option to receive a box or supplies to build their box.
You can find a map of all county food boxes by visiting the Coalition’s Facebook page. They have a map pinned to the top of the page. You can also find them by clicking here and here.
