COLUMBUS, Ind. — A Greensburg man was arrested on six felony charges early Sunday morning after a traffic stop.
The Columbus Police Department (CPD) responded to a disturbance in the 600 block of Maple Street at around 1 a.m. It was reported that Jesse J. Sparks, 31, of Greensburg, pointed a firearm at another person. The suspect then fled the area in a red minivan. Officers observed the vehicle a short time later and stopped it on 25th Street.
Law enforcement officers from the CPD and Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office made contact with the driver, Sparks. He was allegedly uncooperative and refused to exit the vehicle.
When officers attempted to restrain his arms, he pulled away and supposedly began reaching into the minivan where the officers could not see. A Taser was deployed by police and Sparks was eventually taken into custody. A loaded 9mm pistol, along with a large amount of methamphetamine and US currency, was allegedly found on his person.
During a search of the vehicle, CPD supposedly located a backpack containing additional meth and drug-related items, including digital scales.
A small child who was in the back seat of Sparks’ vehicle was removed by law enforcement and left in the care of a family member.
A Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputy who received a minor injury during the altercation was treated at Columbus Regional Health.
Sparks was transported to Bartholomew County Jail and charged with Dealing in Methamphetamine (Level 2 Felony), Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon (Level 4 Felony), Neglect of a Dependent (Level 5 Felony), Intimidation with a Firearm (Level 5 Felony), Pointing a Firearm (Level 6 Felony), and Resisting Law Enforcement (Level 6 Felony).
