INDIANAPOLIS – An Indiana State Police (ISP) trooper was struck and seriously injured by a vehicle on southbound I-65, near mile-marker 116, in Indianapolis on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. Trooper Azariah Keith stopped on the left shoulder to help a stranded motorist change a flat tire.
A second trooper responded to assist with traffic control. After the tire change, Keith was putting his equipment away in his trunk when a car driven by Armaandeep Singh, 22, of Indianapolis, approached at an alleged high rate of speed. It crashed into the concrete median barrier, before striking Trooper Keith and his police car.
The ISP officer suffered critical injuries and was immediately tended to by the second trooper. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was last said to be in stable but serious condition.
Singh has been arrested on the preliminary charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury. He was transported to a local hospital and then subsequently to the Marion County Jail. After field sobriety testing, the suspect was given a certified test for intoxication by way of a blood draw. The results of that test are pending.
The southbound lanes of I-65 were closed for nearly three hours while the scene was processed.
Singh was arrested based on probable cause, with actual charges to be determined by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office upon review of the case.
