NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The most wonderful time of the year is almost here and the City of North Vernon is kicking it off with a bang! “Christmas in the City,” the holiday event that has grown every year since its inception, will for the first time ever, be a three-day event.
The Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place at Stellar Plaza on Friday, December 1, at 6 p.m. There will be carolers and dessert vendors that evening, plus you can meet Santa Claus. The North Vernon Main Street Festival of Trees starts at 1 p.m. and the Park Theatre Civic Centre’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” is at 7 p.m.
Saturday, December 2, features a Christmas market downtown on Madison Avenue from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Also during the day, enjoy the Festival of Trees, food trucks, and another appearance by St. Nick. The Christmas parade begins at 5:30 p.m.
Finally, on Sunday, December 3, there will be a live nativity at 10 a.m. Crimson Oak Restaurant and Pub offers Brunch with Santa and visitors will have one last chance to view the Festival of Trees.
This is the new mayor’s assistant Tara Thormin’s first time spearheading the event.
“The most challenging obstacle I’ve faced is the logistics,” said Thormin, “but after planning everything out and staying organized I feel very confident going forward. It is a relief to be surrounded by people who have attended ‘Christmas in the City’ in years past. I certainly have all of them to thank.”
She’s had help from North Vernon Main Street, the Park Theatre Civic Centre, the Jennings County Economic Development Commission, the North Vernon Street Department, and more.
Thormin added, “I am excited to see downtown North Vernon lit up with Christmas cheer for the first time. ‘Christmas in the City’ has been such a blessing. I am so thankful.”
