NORTH VERNON, Ind. – North Vernon Main Street (NVMS) was recently awarded Arts Project Support funding from the Indiana Arts Council to kickstart a youth-led interactive mural design contest dreamed up by local community member Jennifer Truesdel.
Truesdel originally pitched her idea for the contest during the 2022 Ignite JC community idea competition held by the Jennings County Economic Development Commission (EDC) and was awarded seed funding for her idea.
She approached NVMS and local artist Karen Chilman of Perceptions Yoga, Mindfulness, and Art to help make the idea come to life. The team is working with local art teachers and students to give them an opportunity to submit a design idea for the mural.
All artwork is due by September 1, and the winner, or winners, will be awarded at the end of the month. The finalized mural design will be unveiled at a ceremony for the winners, and painting will commence at the beginning of 2024. The mural will be installed on the side of 263 E. Walnut Street, the building that houses Succulent Smoothies.
