SHELBYVILLE, Ind. – The Indiana State Police (ISP) has announced that Master Trooper Jeremy Basso, an 18-year veteran of ISP, has been taken into custody and is facing one count of perjury and one count of official misconduct. The charges are a result of an investigation conducted by the Indiana State Police on allegations that the trooper conveyed false information during a sentencing hearing in Shelby County Court.
The sentencing hearing was held on March 16, 2023, for a suspect who was previously found guilty of driving while intoxicated and crashing into Basso’s parked police car in a construction zone on I-74 in Shelbyville on June 18, 2021.
A special prosecutor was requested by the Shelby County Prosecutor’s Office to oversee this case and Ripley County Prosecutor Richard Hertel was selected. He has been engaged with ISP investigators throughout the process.
Prosecutor Hertel on Wednesday requested an arrest warrant through the Shelby County Court for one count of perjury, a level 6 felony, and one count of official misconduct, a level 6 felony. They were subsequently granted and served.
Basso was arrested Wednesday evening, booked into Shelby County Jail, and then released on bond.
The suspect has been placed on administrative leave without pay.
