NORTH VERNON, Ind. — The North Vernon City Council convened on Monday, April 10.
The board discussed and then unanimously agreed to enter into a financial resolution with the Jennings County Highway Department to dismantle Historic Bridge 29 in Sand Creek Township, also known as Geneva Ford Bridge. The bridge is a Metal 8 Panel Pin-Connected Pratt Through Truss structure type and was estimated to have been built in 1907.
It will be rebuilt off of Greensburg Street in North Vernon, connecting Tripton Park with Calli Nature Preserve.
A brand new bridge that can sustain modern traffic will then be constructed to replace the historic bridge in Sand Creek.
According to county representative, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is willing to provide 80% of the funding. The county and city would each need to contribute 10% of the total cost of the project by 2026. The project overall is estimated to be priced at $7.5 to 10 million by INDOT.
