COLUMBUS, Ind. — Jerry Lucas, who was involved in a nearly four-hour standoff with law enforcement last week, was formally charged on Wednesday in Bartholomew Circuit Court with attempted murder and battery by means of a deadly weapon.
Officers were called to the 6500 block of West State Road 46, at 7:15 p.m., on Thanksgiving after a report of shots fired. Authorities said that Lucas, 74, shot at his neighbor who was hit with shrapnel but not seriously injured.
When Columbus Police Department SWAT members got there, the suspect had barricaded himself in his home and refused to exit. Lucas finally surrendered at 10:50 p.m. He was preliminarily charged with criminal recklessness.
