SEYMOUR, Ind. – The Indiana State Police (ISP)-Versailles Post investigated a three-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on I-65 in Jackson County where a motorcyclist was flown to a Louisville hospital with serious injuries.
The initial investigation indicates that, shortly after 5:30 p.m., a trooper was patrolling on I-65 in southern Bartholomew County, when he observed a motorcyclist driving erratically on southbound I-65 and radioed for help in catching the suspect.
Another trooper in the area activated his emergency lights and tried to conduct a traffic stop near the 52-mile marker, just north of Seymour. The motorcyclist, later identified as Robert Pettry, 26, of Franklin County, accelerated away from him at high speeds.
Pettry then attempted to pass a car on the shoulder but his vehicle hit the left rear of that car and he was ejected. The motorcycle continued to travel south and struck a third vehicle before catching fire.
The investigation is ongoing and toxicology tests are pending. The southbound lanes of I-65 were closed for nearly three hours for crash investigation and cleanup.
