TAYLORSVILLE, Ind. – The German Township Volunteer Fire Department (GTVFD) and Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office were called to for a crash at the crossroads of I-65 and US 31 on Friday night.
Emergency personnel arrived to find that a semi-trailer hauling an excavator had been traveling south on U.S. 31 and struck the bottom of the overhead bridge for southbound I-65. All the windows of the excavator had broken out and US 31 was covered in glass.
Firefighters and deputies discovered the bridge support beams had been slightly damaged. Southbound U.S. 31 and one lane of southbound I-65 were closed until INDOT could come to inspect the bridge.
While waiting on inspectors, GTVFD stabilized the boom of the excavator, which had almost been sheered off in the accident. It was then cut away from the excavator.
After inspection of the bridge by INDOT, all lanes of the I-65 bridge and U.S. 31 were reopened.
