ELWOOD, Ind. – Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation has established an official memorial fund honoring Elwood Police Department (EPD) officer Noah Shahnavaz, who was killed in the line of duty Sunday morning. He was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Madison County.
The foundation has been designated by the EPD as the official fundraiser to accept monetary donations on behalf of the family. Anyone wishing to donate can visit any First Merchant Bank and reference the Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation. You can also go to www.indianafallen.org click on “Fallen Heroes,” and then select Noah Shahnavaz.
Indiana State Police (ISP) officials are investigating the shooting and so far they know that just after 2 a.m., the officer stopped a car near State Road 37 and County Road 1100N. ISP alleges the suspect exited his vehicle, fired multiple rounds striking Shahnavaz at least one time, and then fled in his car.
Responding police personnel administered life-saving measures to the officer until medics arrived. He was then helicoptered to an Indianapolis area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Just after 2:30 a.m., law enforcement located the car and tried to stop it but the suspect continued on. A tire deflation device was deployed near State Road 37 and 146th Street. The car left State Road 37 and entered I-69.
While on the interstate, police conducted two Precision Immobilization Techniques (PITs). After the second PIT, the vehicle struck a median barrier wall and became immobilized. Officers were able to take the suspect into custody without further incident.
