VERSAILLES, Ind. – Indiana State Police (ISP) troopers were called on Saturday afternoon to a two-vehicle accident on State Road 129, just south of Versailles, that claimed the life of a Bartholomew County man.
The initial investigation indicated that a pickup truck, driven by Rebecca R. Ashcraft, age 68, of Vevay, was northbound on State Road 129 near Benham Road in Ripley County. For an unknown reason, her vehicle crossed the centerline into the path of a southbound SUV, being driven by Lenord R. Sheldon Jr., age 66, of Elizabethtown. The vehicles collided head-on.
Sheldon sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ripley County Coroner’s Office. His wife, Beth A. Sheldon, age 59, a passenger in his vehicle, was seriously hurt and was transported by medical helicopter to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Ashcraft was taken to Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville, where she was treated for minor injuries.
The investigation is ongoing. ISP says that toxicology results are pending at this time.
