GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Greenwood Police Department on Friday provided details on a homicide/suicide that happened Thursday, June 2, at 5 p.m. Police responded to 645 Nicklaus Dr., Apartment D, after a report of shots being fired. Inside, officers discovered a deceased victim, Rachel E. Cooke, 35, of Greenwood, who appeared to have been shot several times. She resided at the address.
Witnesses provided a description of a man that was observed leaving the victim’s apartment shortly after the gunshots were heard. He was seen walking to his car that was parked in front of the apartment and driving away. Law enforcement was able to determine the suspect was a 35-year-old resident of Franklin. Detectives also learned that the victim and suspect had supposedly been involved in a romantic relationship. Both worked at the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Facility.
On Thursday, the suspect met the victim at her apartment at about 4:30 p.m. after she returned home from work. Multiple gunshots were heard a short time later.
With the assistance of the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, the suspect was tracked to Kentucky on I-65 headed south. The Kentucky State Police located the vehicle near Bowling Green.
A traffic stop was initiated at Exit 30. After stopping, the fugitive then shot himself with a handgun and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect’s identity is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.
