NORTH VERNON, Ind. – Detectives from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post have been requested to investigate the death of an inmate that was housed at the Jennings County Jail in North Vernon.
Corrections officers with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office found a female inmate, Sandra I. Ray, 35, of North Vernon, unresponsive in her cell on Thursday at around 7:30 a.m. Medical assistance was immediately provided and EMS responded to assist. The inmate was unable to be revived. The Jennings County Coroner’s Office soon pronounced the woman deceased.
Ray was incarcerated on an Operating While Intoxicated Charge after being arrested on May 24. She had been housed in a cell by herself and was the only person in her cell at the time of her death.
An autopsy was conducted on Thursday but the results and toxicology information are pending. However, no foul play is suspected at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
