NASHVILLE, Ind. – Local Brown County authorities asked the Indiana State Police (ISP) to conduct an investigation in June 2020 to look into possible official misconduct by Brown County Clerk, Kathy L. Smith, 49, of Morgantown.
The suspect had supposedly failed to provide receipts for a voucher that she submitted to the auditor in May and June of 2020 after using a county-issued credit card. When the receipts were obtained it seemed that there were questionable purchases made that did not appear to be for use in the clerk’s office.
Further investigation revealed that Smith allegedly made several other inappropriate purchases for her personal advantage that failed to have any benefit to Brown County Government or its citizens.
After the ISP investigation concluded, the Brown County Circuit Court issued a warrant for her on Friday, March 4. She later surrendered at the Brown County Jail where she was held on a $1,000 bond.
Smith was booked for official misconduct of a public servant, deception, and theft.
