SEYMOUR, Ind. – On a beautiful fall morning, Seymour city officials cut the ribbon to open the Burkart Boulevard South Bypass on Monday. The road connects U.S. 50, on the city’s east side, to South O’Brien Street.
Seymour Mayor Matt Nicholson said, “This will allow semi traffic to get off of Highway 50 when coming from Exit 50B on Interstate 65 to the Freeman Field Industrial Park.”
Jim Plump, executive director of the Jackson County Industrial Development Corp., said, “The opening of the first phase of the bypass is a positive for both industry and traffic in Seymour. Having an overpass over the Louisville and Indiana Railroad tracks will help alleviate traffic backups, especially for emergency vehicles.”
Also included in the project is a 12-foot-wide multipurpose trail along the entire length of the new road, giving people a safe way to walk or ride a bicycle to reach their destination.
Construction on the last phase of the project is going on now and will extend the roadway to U.S. 50, on the west side of town. It should open in the fall of 2022.
The overall cost of the Burkart Boulevard Bypass is about $30 million with 20% or about $6 million coming from the Seymour Redevelopment Commission.
