INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indiana State Police (ISP) announced Monday that Capt. Robert D. Simpson, of Columbus, has been promoted to the rank of Major. He will serve as the Assistant Chief of Staff Communications and Information Systems overseeing several departments.
Simpson, a 1984 graduate of Columbus North High School, earned his Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Vincennes University in 1986. He graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in March 1991 and served with the Columbus Police Department until 1999.
In June 2001, Simpson graduated from the Indiana State Police Academy and served four years as a trooper patrolling four central and southern Indiana counties.
He was promoted in 2005 to Detective at the ISP Seymour Post specializing in Child Crimes. In 2008, Simpson was selected to serve with the FBI as a Task Force Officer with its Cyber Crimes Division. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in April 2018.
He was advanced to Captain in January 2020 and commanded the Criminal Justice Data Division.
Maj. Simpson and his wife Julie have five children, nine grandchildren, and reside in Columbus.
