COLUMBUS, Ind. – Southbound Interstate 65 was backed up near Columbus early Wednesday afternoon as law enforcement in two counties chased a vehicle. The incident, which began in Johnson County at around 1:30 p.m., ended when the driver crashed into the side of a semi just south of Exit 68 in Bartholomew County.
Officers from the Whiteland Police Department, New Whiteland Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Edinburgh Police Department, Indiana State Police, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, and Columbus Police Department were all involved in the pursuit.
The fleeing felon hit several stop sticks and was driving on only two tires when the crash occurred. The trucker was trying to get out of the way when the suspect tried to pass him on the left.
I-65 traffic in both directions was slowed for about an hour. All lanes were reopened by 3 p.m.
