COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus City Council met Tuesday and approved, on first reading. new water and wastewater rates for Columbus City Utilities (CCU) customers. The rate increases agreed upon by the CCU board were submitted to the Indiana Utilities Regulatory Commission, which adjusted them downward.
Columbus rates are in the lower third of Indiana cities. Customers will see new rates reflected in their August bills. Adjustments will be greater for industrial customers than for residential customers.
Expenses had been outpacing growth in revenue for the agency for some time. There had been no change in rates since 2009 when the current wastewater treatment plant was constructed. The agency has several projects it needs to undertake, most related to aging infrastructure.
In other business, on first reading, the city council approved the appropriation of $2.6 million from the general fund to pay for architect and construction management services related to NexusPark, the repurposed Fair Oaks Mall property.
