COLUMBUS, Ind. – Indiana’s local Third House session, sponsored by the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, drew 100 participants on Monday morning. State Senator Greg Walker and State Representative Ryan Lauer were the legislators present. Most of the questions from the public had to do with education.
Lauer, in a discussion on House Bill 1367, a dis-annexation bill, noted that 75 percent of students in Green Township, in the South Bend area, were going to a district other than the one they lived in. He said he did not see any indication of discrimination or racism in the bill.
Lauer said that he supports House Bill 1005, which expands vouchers for families pursuing non-public education, noting that “our budget reflects that we also support public schools.” Walker said of the companion Senate Bill 412, “if we have a market share that shifts to the private sector, it doesn’t make sense to support a large public bureaucracy.”
