JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. – Two years ago, the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office filed possession of child pornography charges on John Cassin, 75, of Whiteland. Detectives served a search warrant at his home and seized a computer that Cassin was using to view images of underage children engaging in explicit sex acts. He was arrested in April 2019, at his business, Mrs. Curl Ice Cream Shop, in Greenwood. Yesterday, he had his day in court.
Cassin pleaded guilty on Monday to two counts of possession of child pornography. The judge accepted the plea agreement which called for an open component with a cap of executed time at two years. The state argued that despite the defendant’s lack of criminal history, the nature of the crime coupled with the extremely young age of the victims necessitated a sentence in the Indiana Department of Correction.
However, Circuit Court Judge Andy Roesener did not agree with the state and sentenced Cassin to a term of three years, with one year to be served on home detention as a condition of probation followed by two additional years of active probation. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life and is subject to the special conditions of a sex offender or violent offender.
